Collection: Macarico - Basilicata

As per "I Suoli", Macarico is a few-thousands-bottles and experimental biodynamic  wine project from the most notable Vulture's producer Cantine del Notaio. Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti, the mastermind behind this, wanted to challenge and expand his wine horizons by trying to make a wine as elegant and complex as his conventional wines using spontaneous fermentations and long macerations.

We are in Basilicata (I know many of you right now just asked themselves "where?!) That is why I always add a map. Here, the Aglianico grape reaches its greatest heights on the upper slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano. Some called the Aglianico the "Nebbiolo of the South". I personally never liked comparisons as they can often led to disappointment. However, one thing I am certain about is that these top-class reds don’t get the respect they deserve, resulting in under-priced gems like Macarico's wine.

The real life proof of this is that after several years in Denmark, I can count on one hand the times I have found a southern-Italy’s Aglianico-grape-based in a wine cart. I’m personally trying to do my best with Vineria to change that throughout our 3 aglianicos from Campania and Basilicata -here in my opinion the greatest expressions of this variety are grown.  However, I have to admit that is not at all an easy job when the restaurant owners -or sommeliers themselves- answer me "I have never heard of this region before".

Anyway, back to Gerardo's dream. Macarico's vineyards are situated at particularly high elevations on the “Alto,” or “upper,” slopes of Vulture (about 450 meters on average). The soils are volcanic ‘tuff,’ called tufo, a volcanic rock, full of silica and other minerals, and ,even if you do not believe in the concept of ‘minerality’ in wine, it is impossible not to smell and taste the connection to the soil in Macarico’s Aglianico (which ages in a cellar excavated from the tuff). Its smoky, stony savor is evocative and distinctive.
