Ser Balduzio by Fiorano is an intense, deep and concentrated red wine from Montepulciano grape. Aged for at least 30 months in big oak barrels, this wine has a rich bouquet of black cherries, ripe fruits, toasted spices, balsamic and wild herbs. On the palate it is vigorous, full-bodied, round and very long. Great to drink now or to keep in the cellar for another 15 years -if you can wait-.
Why have we selected this wine?
Hand-made and spontaneously fermented, Ser Balduzio comes from 20 year old vines in a clay soil at 245 meters above sea level. The wine area is the scenic hills around Piceno. Smooth, intense, concentrated and velvety, with round tannins and a long persistence. Complexity is given by both production methods (read more in specs) and climate. Vineyards indeed seats in the unique climatic conditions of Offida: Mediterranean sea breeze, fresh winds from Sibillini mountainshot sun and complex soil. The Fiorano "non-intervention" and organic winemaking philosophy allows this wine to reflect all the scents and the tastes from the Piceno DOC.
The family: Paola and Paolo
The Fiorano Organic Winery is an organic farm that makes respect for nature its main point. Located in Cossignano, in the heart of the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the south of the Marche. The area is particularly renowned for the high quality of its wines. A small area of municipalities in the Piceno area, including Cossignano, is the elective production area of the Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC and the Offida Pecorino DOCG. The winery is run by Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) one day decided to follow their heart and started pursuing the life of their dreams. Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they own just 10 hectares of vines - and organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with minimal sulphur levels.
Paolo and Paola bought the farm in 1991, and consider their grass-covered vineyards, a beautiful and unique natural amphitheatre which lies in a special spot: about 250-350 metres up on the eastern side of the Apennines, about 15 kms. from the Adriatic, surrounded by their own olive groves, on a mix of clay, limestone and sand. This micro-climate makes Paola and Paolo's wines unique, as the Offida DOCG wine region is.
In the cellar, fermentation of the musts is spontaneous and catalysed by indigenous yeasts naturally present on the skins. The absence of invasive processes, such as clarification, filtration and the addition of sulphur dioxide allows the wines to be very expressive, highlighting all the varietal characteristics of the original grapes.
The wines of Agricola Fiorano reflect the most authentic aspects of the Piceno territory.
