Salt production in Trapani and Marsala flats dates back to the Phoenicians, ca. 500 b.C.This wonderful systems of ponds and artificial lakes is still on function and it still central to the economic growth of the area of Trapani and Marsala.
Thanks to the high levels of salt in the Mediterranean Sea, this area can produce some of the finest salt in the world. Reason why the Trapani salt is protected and awarded by the I.G.P mark; similar to the DOCG appellation for wine.
