100% volcanic biodynamic Aglianico red wine. Ruby red with garnet, light and impenetrable. It has a elegant nose reminiscent of cherry and ripe plum, accompanied by hints of spices and liquorice root. In the mouth is rich, full, well balanced, with notes of cherry, a final cherry and slightly spicy with a pleasant astringency which is typical of the grape variety and of the traditional process.

Why have we selected this wine?

In the South of Italy there are two red wines that are able to compete with the complexity of the northern wine regions such as Burgundy and Piedmont: Etna and Vulture. Mount Vulture is -like Etna- a volcanic area. The indigenous and main cultivated grape is the Aglianico del Vulture -nicknamed by many: the Barolo of the South-. This wines are able to age and gain even more character along the years.

Warm winds from Africa and cold winds from Italian Appennini here create a unique micro-climate. Temperatures during day and night can change of around 15 degrees. The lack of rain and the volcanic soils forces the vines to literally plug the water from the heart of the volcano where the tuff stone is acting like a water sponge and tank.

Macarico makes handmade wines using the old family know-how. Above all, Macarico is one of the best expressions of this land we have ever tasted.

Rino and Gerardo

Macarico is a biodynamic farm owning around 30 hectare on the volcano's golden "contrada" of Alto Vulture  - around 500mt above sea level-. Macarico is a small winery founded by Rino Botte and Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti from Vulture most prestigious winery Cantina del Notaio. The refinement takes place in caves dug into the volcanic tuff, dating back to the 1600s and belonging to the Franciscans.
