Hierà is a volcanic red wine from the active volcano of Vulcano island in the middle of Mediterranean Sea. A rare wine if you think that on the island there are only 3 producers. The wine shows a deep ruby colour with a purple rim. On the nose is rich in aromas, outstanding intensity with elegant notes of red berry fruit, sweet tobacco, spice and chocolate. Fine and elegant tannins, rich, good body and excellent balance, result in a depth and intense finish.

Short fermentation which preserves the quality of the fruit, the wine ages in steel vessels, followed by a transition into barrels. Rests 4 months in the bottle before release.

Why have we selected this wine?

Hierà is a particularly elegant red, which combines all the intensity of the best wines of the Aeolian Islands with the finesse that characterises Hauner's wines.

Calabrese, Alicante & Nocera are the indigenous grapes which grows at 400mt on the active volcanic island of Vulcano in Sicily. This wine is vinified in steel and left to mature for a few months in barrique, a fundamental step to regain a certain softness in the glass. It is in fact an enveloping wine, at times plush, but at the same time fresh and reactive, whose flavor remains well imprinted in the mind for a long, very long time.

This wine is dedicated by Hauner to the British James Stevenson who attempted wine growing on this island in the late 1800. However, after the huge eruption of 1888 destroyed all the vines, Stevenson left, leaving the island to shepherds until the Hauner's arrival 2000.

The Hauner family

It is towards the end of the 1960s, on the occasion of the usual summer holidays in the Aeolian Islands, that Carlo Hauner begins to think about moving to this fascinating, uncontaminated and in some ways ancestral place. First a painter and then a designer, Salina has a magnetic attraction towards him, a unique island for the views it is able to offer.
It is here that Carlo starts getting interested in wine; simply by looking at the farmers of the area drying the Malvasia grapes in the sun after the harvest. The step is short, his passion for wine leads him in a short time to recover some vineyards abandoned by those who had chosen to emigrate and to make them live a new life. It introduces some innovations: like leaving the grapes maturing directly on the vine and experiments with some cooling techniques during fermentation. Small revolutions that fascinate experts, starting with Veronelli, and that bring Hauner's Malvasia to the table of some of the best restaurants of those years.
With the passage of time his fame strengthened, the winery grew and became more and more one of the protagonists of the rebirth of not only Sicilian but also Italian wine.
Today it is a reality carried on by his son Carlo Junior, but what has remained unchanged is the constant attention to quality and territorial adherence that have made Hauner's wines famous in the world. Bright and elegant whites and reds, irresistible.

A curiosity, the labels on the bottles are picturing some of the painting from the Carlo Senior. Today the grandchild Andrea is slowly taking the lead of the winery.
